Driving a sustainable agenda
Chiesi conference that puts caring front and centre

The challenge

As a business totally committed to sustainability, Chiesi wanted to ensure that their annual conference lived and reflected these values. As part of their commitment, Chiesi decided to keep the conference in the UK to reduce their carbon footprint – choosing Celtic Manor in Wales as the ideal location. They challenged us to design and deliver an event that embodied the company commitments and helped them achieve their sustainability objectives.

The solution

From the outset, we prioritised sustainability without compromising on delivering the brand experience that was essential for Chiesi to communicate their messages. We focused on employing a circular economy wherever possible – such as with the set and any additional installations always being stock first, reducing bespoke items needing to be built. We ensured all crew, where possible, were local, reducing travel (and prioritising public transport), and where we did need to transport items, we offset the fuel in the truck with HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil). Where possible we utilised digital signage, emphasising the need to reduce and avoid bespoke printed items. We were pleased to see Chiesi opt for a partially vegetarian menu to reduce pollution through meat production. Finally, we worked with Event Cycle so that the white cotton used to wrap the set and carpet for the stage could be repurposed by local community groups to benefit their members.

The outcome

We met the brief, and then some. Not only producing a successful event, but significantly making an impact on our shared carbon footprint.

  • Henley & Brentry Community Centre received a desperately needed new carpet and Bethania Assembly of God Church now have cotton tablecloths to use during their free community lunch groups
  • Offsetting with HVO reduced the fuel carbon footprint by 88% *
  • Set the standard for future events (such as being pro-active about making sure items can renter the economy through re-use and now using Rewind event carpets)

Ensuring we support our clients’ sustainability agenda is key for Pb, and undoubtedly for Chiesi. Our efforts supported them to achieve their ambitions and strengthens our business relationship.

* The truck used for transporting the AV equipment will be fuelled by Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) instead of diesel. Using the UK Government GHG conversion factors, Pb have calculated carbon footprint based on the fuel use including the well to tank upstream emissions of just under 150kg CO2e. This fuel switch offers around an 88% carbon footprint reduction compared to the equivalent volume of diesel consumption, saving over 1 tonne of CO2e emissions.
